macOS updates bring security patches, bug fixes, and new features. Small updates and major yearly upgrades are both handled from the built-in Software Update screen.
This guide applies to Macs running macOS Big Sur or later.

Use these steps if you want to confirm your Mac is current, install a security update, or upgrade to a newer macOS version when Apple offers it for your model.
Check for and Install Updates
- Open the Apple menu and choose System Settings.
- Select General > Software Update.
- Wait while the Mac checks Apple’s update servers.
- Click Update Now for a routine update, or Upgrade Now for a new major macOS version if you want it.
- Enter the administrator password and accept the terms if asked.
- Let the Mac download, restart, and finish installing. Major upgrades can take much longer than small patches.
Prepare Before Updating
- Back up first, especially before a major upgrade. Time Machine is the simplest built-in option.
- Plug in a MacBook so the battery does not run down during the install.
- Check System Settings > General > Storage and free space if needed. Major upgrades can require tens of gigabytes.
- Use a stable Wi-Fi connection for the download.
- Do not force shut down while the Apple logo and progress bar are showing.
Update Tips and Fixes
Enable Automatic Updates
In Software Update, open the automatic update details and enable options for macOS updates, security responses, and system files if you want future fixes installed with less manual work.
Check Your Current Version
Open Apple menu > About This Mac to see the macOS name and version number, then compare it with Apple’s macOS information if needed.
If a Download Gets Stuck
Restart the Mac and try Software Update again. Also check free storage and network stability before assuming the update itself is broken.
Plan for Downtime
A small update may finish quickly, while a major upgrade can run for half an hour or longer and restart more than once. Start when you do not need the Mac immediately.
