Helldivers 2 depends heavily on always-online matchmaking. A connection error can be caused by overloaded Arrowhead servers, PlayStation Network issues, a PSN account link, local network instability, NAT, VPN routing, or a stuck matchmaking session.
These steps apply to Helldivers 2 on PS5 and PC through Steam.
Does this affect you?
Use this if Helldivers 2 cannot connect, matchmaking hangs, or you disconnect mid-mission.
Check for a server-side outage first
- Check Arrowhead Game Studios’ official social accounts for server updates.
- On PC, check PlayStation Network service status if your account is linked.
- Try again during off-peak hours if the issue appears after a patch, Major Order, or weekend spike.
- Fully restart the game instead of only retrying matchmaking.
- Check Steam Community or other community hubs for widespread reports.
If Arrowhead confirms server load or an outage, the fix has to happen server-side.
Fix your local connection
- On PC, confirm your linked PSN account is still connected in the game’s account settings if you use that link.
- Restart the router by unplugging it for one minute.
- Use Ethernet instead of Wi-Fi if possible.
- On PS5, check NAT type under Settings > Network > View Connection Status.
- Disable VPN while playing.
- Pause downloads, streams, and other heavy bandwidth use if disconnects happen mid-mission.
If solo play works but joining others fails, NAT type and connection stability are the most important checks.
Matchmaking versus disconnections
Failure to connect at login often points to service status or account linking. Disconnects during missions point more toward Wi-Fi instability, packet loss, NAT, or a saturated network.
When many players report the same problem at the same time, avoid reinstalling. Server load is common after major updates and content pushes.
