Google 2-Step Verification protects your Gmail account, but it becomes stressful when codes do not arrive or the phone that received them is gone. The fix depends on whether you still have any trusted method available.

Use this for any Google Account with 2-Step Verification enabled when Gmail asks for a code, prompt, or verification method you cannot access.
You still have your phone, but codes are not arriving
Start with delivery and notification checks.
- On a device where you are still signed in, open myaccount.google.com > Security > 2-Step Verification and confirm the phone number is current.
- For SMS, make sure the phone has signal and is not in Airplane Mode.
- If you use Google Prompt, make sure the Google app is installed and notifications are enabled.
- On the sign-in screen, choose Try another way to use a different method already on the account.
- Use a saved backup code if you generated one earlier.
You lost the phone entirely
Use account recovery when the 2-Step device is gone.
- Go to g.co/recover from a trusted browser.
- Enter the Google Account email address.
- Choose any method you still have, such as recovery email, backup phone, backup codes, or another signed-in device.
- If none are available, answer Google’s identity questions as accurately as possible, including old passwords.
- After verification, remove the old 2-Step method and add the new phone or authenticator.
- Watch the recovery email you provided for updates. The process can take minutes or several days.
More control
Generate backup codes
Open Security > 2-Step Verification > Backup codes and save a set. Each code works once and can get you in when your phone is unavailable.
Do not rely on one phone number
Add a second phone, authenticator app, and security key if possible. A single phone number is the most common point of failure.
Prepare before travel or phone upgrades
Move 2-Step methods to a new phone before wiping the old one. Install Google Authenticator before travel so you are not depending entirely on SMS in another country.
