Fake Geek Squad renewal messages claim a large membership charge and push you to call a cancellation number. The charge often does not exist; the phone call is the real trap.

Check whether the notice is real
Verify through your own accounts before calling anything in the message.
- Go to bestbuy.com or the official Best Buy app by typing it yourself.
- Check Order History or My Best Buy for any real Geek Squad membership or renewal.
- Check your bank or card statement for an actual charge. Do not rely on the email invoice alone.
- Inspect the sender address. Real Best Buy messages should use a Best Buy-controlled domain, not a lookalike or free email account.
- Be suspicious of messages that say you must call within hours to cancel. Real subscriptions can be managed through your account.
- If the message is a PayPal invoice, log in to PayPal directly and check Activity. An unpaid invoice is not the same as a charge.
If you already called or paid
Do not use the scam email again to fix the problem.
- Do not call the number from the message again.
- If you gave remote access, disconnect from the internet and end the remote session.
- Run a security scan with Windows Security or another reputable scanner.
- If you paid by card, gift card, wire, or payment app, contact the bank, card issuer, retailer, or transfer provider immediately.
- Change important passwords from a clean device, especially email, banking, and any account used while the scammer had access.
- Report the impersonation to Best Buy through its official site and to reportfraud.ftc.gov.
Protect yourself next time
These habits stop renewal scams before they become phone calls.
- Never call a number from an unexpected billing or renewal email.
- Bookmark bestbuy.com and other services you actually use, then use bookmarks to check accounts.
- Turn on bank or card purchase alerts so real charges come from your financial institution, not a random email.
- Be cautious with renewal emails for services you do not remember buying, including Norton, McAfee, Amazon Prime, and Geek Squad.

A real PayPal invoice can still be fake
Scammers sometimes send invoices through PayPal’s real system. That only proves an invoice was sent; it does not prove the Geek Squad membership exists.
