GE Dishwasher 1H Code: What It Means and How to Fix It

On a GE dishwasher, 1H usually means Delay Start is set for one hour. It looks like an error code, but it is normally just a countdown before the wash begins.

This applies to GE, GE Profile, and Cafe dishwashers with electronic displays and Delay Start or Delay Hours controls.

Does this affect you?

Use this if the display shows 1H or 1h and the dishwasher seems to be waiting instead of starting.

Cancel the delay and start now

  1. Press Delay Start or Delay Hours repeatedly.
  2. Keep pressing until the delay cycles back to off.
  3. If your model has no off position, press Start or Start/Reset once to begin immediately.
  4. On many models, hold Start for about 3 seconds to cancel the current setting.
  5. Reselect the cycle and press Start.
  6. Close the door firmly so the cycle can run.

If the door is open, the countdown may pause. A steady 2H, 4H, or 8H means a longer delay, not a bigger problem.

Stop accidental delays

  • Check the display before walking away from each load.
  • If a number plus H appears, clear Delay Start.
  • Use Control Lock if children or accidental touches keep setting delays.
  • On many GE models, hold Heated Dry or the padlock-marked button for about 3 seconds to lock or unlock controls.
  • Top-control models may hide the Delay pad along the top door edge.

If 1H is frozen

  1. Turn the dishwasher off at the breaker or unplug it if accessible.
  2. Leave it off for about 5 minutes.
  3. Restore power.
  4. Select a cycle and press Start.
  5. If 1H immediately returns and no buttons respond, contact GE support or an appliance technician.

GE dishwashers do have real fault codes, but they usually flash, beep, or appear with warning lights. A steady countdown-style 1H is Delay Start.
