When Find My says an iPhone is offline, it usually means the service has not received a fresh location from the device. The phone may be out of signal, powered off, low on battery, in Airplane Mode, or missing the Find My and Location Services settings needed to report where it is.
This guide applies to iPhones on iOS 17 and iOS 18 when checking from another Apple device or from iCloud on the web.
Does This Affect You?
Follow these steps if Find My shows Offline, No Location Found, or an old location timestamp even though you believe the iPhone should still be reachable.
Check Location Services and Find My Settings
If you still have the iPhone in hand, confirm the settings that allow it to report its location.
- Open Settings > Privacy & Security > Location Services and make sure Location Services is on.
- In the Location Services list, tap Find My and allow location access instead of leaving it set to Never.
- Go to Settings, tap your name, then open Find My.
- Turn on Find My iPhone, Find My network, and Send Last Location.
- After changing these settings, Find My should update the next time the iPhone has an internet connection.
Check the Connection and Last Known Location
If the iPhone is not with you, use the information already shown in Find My to decide what is most likely happening.
- Open the Find My app on another Apple device, or go to icloud.com/find and sign in with the same Apple ID.
- Select the offline iPhone from the device list.
- Look for the last known location and its timestamp. A recent timestamp can mean the iPhone only lost signal briefly.
- If the timestamp is old or there is no location, the phone may be off, out of battery, or away from both cellular and Wi-Fi coverage.
Turn On Lost Mode While You Wait
Lost Mode locks the iPhone remotely and prepares a Lock Screen message that appears as soon as the phone reconnects.
- In Find My, choose the offline iPhone.
- Tap Activate under Mark As Lost or Lost Mode.
- Enter a reachable phone number and an optional message.
- Confirm activation. The request is saved now and takes effect when the iPhone comes online.
- Watch for a notification from Find My when the device is detected again.

Powered-Off Tracking
Recent iPhone models can sometimes report a location for a short time after being powered off by using the Find My network and nearby Apple devices. That window is limited, so an older offline timestamp may simply mean the phone has been off too long.
Family Sharing
If you are checking a family member’s iPhone, make sure they are still sharing location with you under Settings > their name > Find My > Share My Location.
Airplane Mode
An iPhone with Airplane Mode on and Wi-Fi off has no path to report its position, so Find My will show it offline even if the phone is nearby.
If It May Be Stolen
Besides enabling Lost Mode, contact your carrier to suspend the line. If theft is likely, file a police report, since carriers and insurers may ask for a report number.
