A sparkline is a tiny chart inside a single Excel cell. It is useful beside a row of numbers when you want to show the trend without inserting a full chart object.

Use this for Excel for Microsoft 365, Excel 2021, and Excel 2019 on Windows or Mac. Sparklines are not available in Excel for the web.
Insert a sparkline
Create the mini chart next to the values it summarizes.
- Click the empty cell where the sparkline should appear.
- Open the Insert tab.
- In the Sparklines group, choose Line, Column, or Win/Loss.
- Select the data range to chart, such as twelve monthly values in the same row.
- Click OK.
- Drag the fill handle down if you want matching sparklines for additional rows.
Group sparklines and keep the scale consistent
Use one scale when comparing rows so the visuals are not misleading.
- Select all sparkline cells you want to compare.
- Open the Sparkline tab or Sparkline section on the ribbon.
- Click Group if they are not already grouped.
- Open Axis.
- Set Vertical Axis Minimum Value Options to Same for All Sparklines.
- Set Vertical Axis Maximum Value Options to Same for All Sparklines.
Customize or remove a sparkline
Select the sparkline cell first.
- Use Sparkline Color to change the line or bar color.
- Use Marker Color to highlight high, low, first, last, or negative points.
- Check High Point, Low Point, Negative Points, First Point, or Last Point in the Show group.
- To remove one, select the cell and choose Clear. Use the Clear menu to remove selected sparklines or whole groups.
More control
Win/Loss shows direction only
Win/Loss sparklines use equal-sized blocks for positive and negative results. They show success or failure, not the size of each value.
Choose how blanks behave
Open Edit Data > Hidden and Empty Cells and choose Gaps, Zero, or Connect data points with line depending on how missing values should appear.
Sparklines belong to cells
They move and resize with the cell. If you need a chart that floats, resizes freely, or has labels and legends, use Insert > Charts instead.
Version support matters
Sparklines require desktop Excel 2010 or later to display and edit reliably. Older versions or Excel for the web may not render them as expected.
