Excel freezing, showing Not Responding, or crashing can come from add-ins, a damaged Office install, a heavy workbook, file corruption, or memory limits. Start by separating app-wide problems from workbook-specific ones.

Use this for Excel for Microsoft 365, Excel 2021, and Excel 2019 on Windows or Mac when Excel hangs during editing, crashes on launch, or becomes painfully slow with one workbook.
Find out if it is an add-in, then repair Office
Safe Mode is the quickest Windows test.
- Close Excel.
- Hold Ctrl while opening Excel, or press Windows key + R, type excel /safe, and press Enter.
- Work for a few minutes. If Excel is stable, open File > Options > Add-ins, choose COM Add-ins, click Go, and disable add-ins.
- Restart normally and re-enable add-ins one at a time until the crashing one is found.
- If Excel still crashes in Safe Mode, repair Office from Apps and features > Microsoft 365 or Office > Modify > Online Repair.
On Mac, hold Shift while opening Excel to skip add-ins. If repair is needed, reinstall Excel from office.com because Mac has no separate Office repair tool.
Speed up a slow workbook
When Excel is stable but sluggish, the file is often the issue.
- Press Ctrl+End. If Excel jumps far below or right of your real data, delete the unused rows and columns, then save.
- Look for many volatile functions such as NOW, TODAY, RAND, and OFFSET. Replace with static values where live recalculation is unnecessary.
- Use Formulas > Calculation Options > Manual while editing very large workbooks, then press F9 when you need recalculation.
- Check File > Info for workbook size. Many embedded images and objects can make saving and scrolling slow.
More control
Repair one corrupted workbook
Open Excel, choose File > Open, select the file once, click the arrow beside Open, and choose Open and Repair.
Check 32-bit Office limits
Large workbooks can crash under 32-bit Office because it can address far less memory. Check File > Account > About Excel and consider installing 64-bit Office for heavy files.
Adjust AutoRecover for large files
If Excel pauses every few minutes, increase the AutoRecover interval under File > Options > Save, especially for large workbooks.
Use Event Viewer for recurring crashes
Open Windows Logs > Application and look for EXCEL.EXE errors around the crash time. The faulting module often identifies a bad add-in or driver.
