How to Add a Drop-Down Calendar Date Picker in Excel

Excel does not have one universal calendar button for every platform. You can either restrict cells to valid dates with Data Validation, or on some Windows desktop installs, add an older clickable Date Picker control.

Does this affect you?

Use this for Excel for Microsoft 365, Excel 2021, and Excel 2019. Data Validation works on Windows, Mac, and Excel Online. The classic Date and Time Picker control is Windows-only and depends on older ActiveX components.

Restrict a cell to valid dates with Data Validation

This prevents bad date entries even without a pop-up calendar.

  1. Select the cells where dates should be entered.
  2. Open the Data tab.
  3. Click Data Validation.
  4. Set Allow to Date.
  5. Choose a rule such as between, then enter reasonable start and end dates.
  6. Open Input Message and add a prompt such as Enter a date (MM/DD/YYYY).
  7. Click OK.

Add a clickable pop-up calendar on Windows

Use this only when your Excel version includes the control.

  1. Turn on the Developer tab from File > Options > Customize Ribbon.
  2. Open Developer > Insert > More Controls or ActiveX Controls.
  3. Look for Microsoft Date and Time Picker Control.
  4. Draw the control on the sheet near the target cell.
  5. Right-click it and use Properties to adjust size, font, format, or linked behavior.
  6. Turn off Design Mode to make it clickable.

More control

ActiveX is not portable

The Date and Time Picker control does not work on Mac or Excel Online and may be unavailable on some modern Windows installs. Data Validation is more reliable for shared files.

Use a helper list for a simple date dropdown

Create a helper column of valid dates, then use Data Validation > List to point at it. It is not a calendar, but it works across platforms.

Google Sheets has a built-in date picker

If changing tools is acceptable, Google Sheets shows a calendar picker automatically when a cell is formatted as a date and edited.

Find existing bad dates

After adding validation to an already-filled column, use Data > Data Validation > Circle Invalid Data to highlight entries that break the new rule.
