Uneven electric burner heat usually comes from poor pan contact or a worn burner element. Before replacing parts, confirm the pan is flat, the burner is seated, and the surface is clean.
This applies to coil burners and smooth glass or ceramic electric cooktops.
Does this affect you?
Use this if food cooks faster on one side of the pan, a coil glows unevenly, or a glass-top burner has obvious hot and cool areas.
Check cookware and contact
- Set the pan on a flat counter.
- Use a ruler or straightedge to check whether the bottom is warped.
- Match the pan size to the burner size.
- On a coil range, make sure the coil sits flat in its drip pan and socket.
- On a glass cooktop, clean and dry both the glass and the pan bottom.
- Retest with a known-flat pan.
Let burners cool for 20 to 30 minutes before touching them. Turn off the breaker or unplug the range before lifting a coil from its receptacle. Do not use a cracked glass cooktop because liquid can reach live parts underneath.
Inspect the burner element
- Look for a warped coil, scorched area, odd discoloration, or sections that no longer glow evenly.
- Remove a cooled coil and inspect the plug terminals for corrosion or looseness.
- Swap with a same-size coil from another burner if available. If the problem follows the coil, the coil is bad.
- On a glass-top range, turn the burner on briefly and watch whether part of the radiant element glows late or dim.
- If the same burner position stays weak with a good coil, the terminal block or socket may be failing.
Coil elements are often easy to replace. Terminal blocks and glass-top radiant elements involve internal wiring and more disassembly. A technician can test resistance and confirm whether the element, socket, or control is at fault.
