Microsoft Edge includes Read Aloud, a text-to-speech tool that can read web pages and PDFs out loud. It includes controls for play, pause, skipping, reading speed, and voice selection, so you do not need a separate extension for basic page narration.

Start Read Aloud on a page
This works best on articles and text-heavy pages.
- Open the page in Edge.
- Click the three-dot menu in the top-right corner.
- Choose Read aloud.
- Use the toolbar that appears near the top of the page to pause, play, skip back, or skip forward.
- Open Voice options to choose another voice or adjust reading speed.
- Close the Read Aloud toolbar with X when you are done, or choose Read aloud from the menu again.
Read only a selected part of the page
Use selection reading when a long page has only one section you need.
- Highlight the text you want Edge to read.
- Right-click the highlighted text.
- Choose Read aloud selection.
- Edge reads only the selected text instead of starting at the top of the page.
More control
Use Read Aloud with PDFs
Open the PDF in Edge, then use the same three-dot menu > Read aloud path. If the PDF toolbar shows a Read aloud icon, you can start it there instead. This works when the PDF contains selectable text; scanned image-only PDFs may need OCR first.
Adjust the page display
While Read Aloud is active, Edge may also offer display controls through Immersive Reader, such as text size, font, spacing, and background theme. These display options are separate from voice and speed.
Check audio if you hear nothing
Make sure system volume is not muted and the Edge tab is not muted. If voices sound robotic, install additional language or voice packs in Windows Settings > Time & language > Speech or Language & region, because Edge can use voices available from the operating system.
