A blank Ecobee screen usually means the thermostat is not receiving power from the HVAC system. The thermostat may look dead, but the cause is often a tripped breaker, furnace switch, blown control-board fuse, loose wire, or Power Extender Kit issue.
These steps apply to Ecobee3 Lite, Ecobee SmartThermostat, Ecobee4, and other Ecobee thermostats wired to a home heating and cooling system.

Use this if the Ecobee display is completely dark, touch does nothing, and the app shows the thermostat offline. Work through the power checks before assuming the thermostat itself failed.
Rule out the easy power causes first
Most blank-screen cases are solved before touching the thermostat wiring.
- Check the breaker panel for a circuit labeled furnace, air handler, HVAC, or heat.
- If the breaker is in the middle position, flip it fully off and then back on.
- Find the furnace or air handler power switch, which may look like a regular light switch near the unit.
- Confirm that switch is on.
- Look for a blown 3-amp or 5-amp fuse on the furnace control board if you are comfortable safely opening the furnace access panel.
- If your Ecobee uses a Power Extender Kit instead of a dedicated C-wire, confirm the PEK connections are still seated at the control board.
A blown low-voltage fuse often means thermostat wiring shorted at some point. Replacing the fuse without finding the cause can make the new fuse blow immediately too.
Reseat the thermostat and check its wiring
If the HVAC system has power, the next likely issue is a loose connection at the Ecobee wall plate.
- Turn off power to the furnace or air handler at its switch before touching the thermostat.
- If you are not completely sure the switch kills power, turn off the HVAC breaker as well.
- Gently pull the Ecobee display straight off the wall plate.
- Take a clear photo of the wiring before moving anything.
- Check that each wire is fully inserted into its labeled terminal.
- Reseat any loose wire by pressing it firmly back into place.
- Snap the display back onto the wall plate.
- Restore power and wait a minute or two for the thermostat to wake up.
Stop immediately if any wire looks frayed, scorched, melted, or damaged. That can indicate a short circuit or electrical problem that should be handled by a licensed HVAC technician or electrician.
Safety notes before touching HVAC wiring
The thermostat uses low-voltage control wiring, but the furnace or air handler also contains household voltage. Treat the equipment carefully.
- Turn off power before removing the thermostat display or touching terminals.
- Do only the checks described here.
- Do not force the thermostat open or unscrew furnace components unless you know what you are doing.
- Keep the wiring photo until the thermostat is working again.
- If the system is under warranty or you are unsure, contact Ecobee support or an HVAC professional.
If you replace a control-board fuse and it blows again after power returns, stop replacing fuses. That points to a short somewhere in the thermostat wiring, Power Extender Kit, or control circuit.
Check for a slow reboot or hardware failure
After power is restored, give the thermostat time before declaring it dead.
- Leave the Ecobee connected to confirmed power for 10 to 15 minutes.
- Check the Ecobee app for a recent last-seen time, which can suggest the thermostat is cycling power.
- If a firmware update was pending, allow extra time for the thermostat to finish rebooting.
- If the screen remains dark after confirmed HVAC power, good wiring, and a reseated display, contact Ecobee support.
Homes without a dedicated C-wire rely on a Power Extender Kit or power-stealing behavior, and those setups are more sensitive to loose connections. If the problem returns, having an HVAC technician run a dedicated C-wire can be the more permanent fix.
Many Ecobee thermostats include a three-year warranty when registered. If the power and wiring checks are clean and the screen is still blank, contact Ecobee with the serial number before paying for replacement hardware.
