Dryer Tripping the Breaker? What It Means and How to Fix It

A dryer that trips a breaker is warning you about heat or electrical load. Do not keep resetting a breaker that trips instantly or repeatedly; that can turn a short circuit into a fire risk.

This applies to electric dryers on dedicated 240-volt circuits and gas dryers on standard 120-volt circuits.

Does this affect you?

Use this if the dryer shuts off and the breaker is tripped either immediately at startup or partway through the cycle.

Safety first

  • Reset the breaker only once for observation, not repeatedly.
  • Never install a larger breaker to stop trips. The breaker protects the wire size in the wall.
  • Do not run a dryer on an extension cord.
  • Electric dryers normally need a dedicated 30-amp, 240-volt circuit.
  • Unplug the dryer and turn off the breaker before inspecting the cord or moving the machine.
  • Keep the lint trap and vent clear because restricted airflow makes the dryer run hotter and longer.

Figure out when it trips

  1. Confirm the dryer is on its own circuit.
  2. Check the dryer data plate for electrical requirements.
  3. Reset the breaker once.
  4. Start a normal cycle and note whether it trips instantly, within seconds, or later during heating.
  5. If it trips instantly every time, stop testing and treat it as a likely short.

Check the cord and outlet

  • With the dryer unplugged, inspect the power cord for cracks, frays, melted spots, or scorch marks.
  • Check the outlet for discoloration, burning smell, or a loose-fitting plug.
  • Look near the dryer terminal block area for signs of heat damage if visible without unsafe disassembly.
  • Replace a damaged cord before use.
  • Have an electrician replace a damaged outlet or investigate circuit wiring.

If the breaker trips as the dryer starts heating, the heating element or wiring may be shorted inside the cabinet. Because this involves high current and a circuit already tripping, stop and call a technician or licensed electrician.

Gas dryers use electricity for the motor and controls, so tripping on a gas model more often points to a motor, control board, cord, outlet, or breaker problem than an electric heating element. Breakers can also wear out and trip under normal loads, but panel work belongs to a licensed electrician.
