
Many thin laptops no longer include a full-size Ethernet jack. To use a stable wired connection, you only need an adapter that matches the ports your laptop still has.

Use this for MacBooks, ultrabooks, and modern Windows laptops that do not have a built-in Ethernet port but need a wired connection for calls, gaming, file transfers, or weak Wi-Fi areas.
Use a USB-to-Ethernet adapter
The adapter appears to the computer like a normal wired network card.
- Check your laptop ports. Most current laptops use USB-C, while some older models use USB-A. Buy a USB-C-to-Ethernet or USB-A-to-Ethernet adapter that matches.
- Plug the adapter into the laptop.
- Connect an Ethernet cable from the adapter to the router, modem, switch, or wall jack.
- On Windows, wait for automatic driver installation. If it does not connect, check Windows Update or the adapter manufacturer driver page.
- On Mac, open System Settings > Network and confirm the USB Ethernet connection appears and shows Connected.
- Turn Wi-Fi off temporarily if you want to guarantee traffic is using the cable.

Buy gigabit if your plan is fast
Cheap USB 2.0 adapters can bottleneck well below modern broadband speeds. For fast service, choose an adapter listed as USB 3.0 or Gigabit Ethernet.
A dock may be smarter than a single adapter
If you also need HDMI, extra USB ports, charging, or card slots, a USB-C hub or docking station with Ethernet may solve several port problems at once.
Confirm which connection is active
Windows shows the active network under Settings > Network & internet. macOS shows it under System Settings > Network. Disable Wi-Fi briefly if the computer seems to fall back to wireless.
Good Wi-Fi is still enough for many people
If you only need wired access occasionally, a well-placed Wi-Fi 6 router may be adequate for normal browsing and streaming. Wired still wins for latency-sensitive gaming and repeated large transfers.
