How to Fix the ChatGPT Too Many Requests Error

A ChatGPT too many requests message usually means either your account reached a temporary usage limit or OpenAI is throttling requests during a busy period. The right fix depends on which one is happening.

Does this affect you?

Use this for ChatGPT on the web, mobile app, or desktop app, on free or paid accounts, when you see a rate limit, too many requests, or try again later message.

Check if you have hit a usage limit

This is common on the free plan and can also happen on paid plans with certain models.

  1. Read the exact message. If it gives a countdown or says to try again after a specific time, it is an account or model usage limit.
  2. On the free tier, message caps reset periodically and can change over time. Trust the message shown in the app rather than an old limit you remember.
  3. On Plus or another paid plan, check whether you are using a more advanced model with a tighter cap. Switch to a lighter model in the model picker for routine tasks.
  4. Open account settings and billing or usage areas if available to see whether your plan shows limit information.
  5. Wait for the cooldown period. There is no legitimate workaround that bypasses an account limit.

Check for a server-side issue

Do this if the error appears suddenly and you have not been using ChatGPT heavily.

  1. Open status.openai.com.
  2. Look for an active incident affecting ChatGPT or related features.
  3. If an incident is listed, wait rather than repeatedly retrying.
  4. Try another access path, such as the website instead of the mobile app, to see whether one platform is affected.
  5. If you are using the OpenAI API through a custom app, check the API usage and rate limit dashboard separately. API limits are not the same as ChatGPT app limits.
  6. If the status page is normal and the message lasts beyond the stated wait time, sign out and back in or restart the app.

More control

Save advanced models for advanced work

The most capable models often have tighter caps. Use a standard model for drafting, simple questions, and formatting, then switch to the advanced model only when the task benefits from it.

Higher plans may raise limits

If rate limits interrupt heavy daily work, compare current ChatGPT plans. Limits and tiers change, so check OpenAI’s live pricing and plan pages before upgrading.

Do not spam retries

Rapidly resending the same prompt while rate-limited will not help and may keep you stuck longer. Wait for the timer or confirm the service status first.
