- Describe one job in plain language, including responsibilities, tools, team size, customers, and any real results.
- Ask: Turn this into 3 to 4 resume bullet points. Use strong action verbs and include numbers only where I provided them. Do not invent statistics.
- Review the output and remove anything that is not true. If ChatGPT invents a claim, tell it to rewrite without that detail.
- Repeat one role at a time so each job gets enough attention.
- After all bullets are drafted, ask ChatGPT to flag repeated action verbs and suggest more varied wording.
Tailor your resume to a specific job posting
Use this after you already have a draft.
- Paste your current resume text.
- Paste the job posting below it.
- Ask ChatGPT to compare them and identify which real skills or experience should be emphasized more.
- Ask which required skills from the posting are missing from your resume, then add only the ones you actually have.
- Ask whether your wording matches the job posting’s key terms closely enough for applicant tracking systems.

Draft cover letters separately
Once the resume is solid, ask for a three-paragraph cover letter based on the resume and job posting. Treat it as a first draft and rewrite the opening yourself so it sounds less generic.
Protect personal information
Be careful with phone numbers, addresses, employer names, and private job details. Review ChatGPT Data Controls if privacy matters, and never put sensitive identifiers such as Social Security numbers in a resume prompt.
ChatGPT knows only what you provide
It cannot verify your employment history or accomplishments. Read the final resume line by line and confirm every date, title, tool, credential, number, and outcome before sending it.
