ChatGPT Projects are workspaces that group related chats, files, and project-specific instructions together. They keep ongoing work from getting lost in a long sidebar of unrelated conversations.
Does this affect you?
Use this if you have ChatGPT Projects available on your plan and want a cleaner way to organize a trip, client, class, writing project, home project, or recurring research task.
Create and set up a project
A project gives ChatGPT shared context for new chats started inside it.
- Open ChatGPT on the web or desktop app and sign in with an account that includes Projects.
- In the sidebar, choose New project or the Projects folder option.
- Name the project clearly, such as Kitchen Remodel, Europe Trip, Client Johnson, or Q3 Report.
- Choose a color if the interface offers one, so the project is easier to spot.
- Open the project and add relevant files, such as PDFs, spreadsheets, outlines, notes, or reference documents.
- Add project instructions if needed, such as preferred tone, audience, assumptions, or formatting rules.
- Start new chats from inside the project so those files and instructions are available without re-uploading everything.
What to actually use projects for
Projects work best when the topic has a clear boundary.
- Use outcome-based projects, such as Plan Japan Trip or Write Chapter 3, instead of broad containers like Random Work.
- Move older related chats into the project when the interface allows it, so previous context is not stranded in regular history.
- Keep unrelated files out. Extra documents can confuse the context and make ChatGPT reference the wrong material.
- Use separate projects for separate clients, classes, reports, or topics so instructions do not mix.
- Archive or delete finished projects to keep the sidebar manageable.
More control
Projects are different from Custom GPTs
A Custom GPT is a reusable assistant you configure and may share. A project is a private workspace for your own related chats, files, and instructions. Use a project for organizing your work; use a Custom GPT when you want a reusable assistant behavior.
Watch file and storage limits
Projects can have caps on total file storage, number of files, or available context. If uploads stop working, remove outdated files or split the work into smaller projects.
Project instructions stay inside the project
Instructions inside a project apply to chats started there. Your account-level custom instructions may still apply as a baseline, but normal chats outside the project are not changed by the project settings.
