The official ChatGPT Mac app is useful if you use ChatGPT often and want it available without hunting for a browser tab. It uses your existing account and syncs with the website and mobile apps.

Install the official ChatGPT app
Download it only from OpenAI or the Mac App Store.
- Open the Mac App Store and search for ChatGPT. Confirm the publisher is OpenAI, then install it.
- Or go to chatgpt.com/download and download the macOS installer from OpenAI.
- Open the app.
- Sign in with your existing ChatGPT account or create one.
- Wait for conversation history to sync across the app, website, and mobile app.
What the Mac app adds over the browser
The app adds a few desktop-specific conveniences.
- Global shortcut: Press Option+Space from anywhere on the Mac to open a compact ChatGPT window.
- Voice Mode: Talk to ChatGPT directly in the app without keeping a browser tab open.
- Screen or app context on supported paid plans: Grant permission and ask about something visible on screen or in a supported app.
- Mac behavior: Keep it in the Dock or menu bar so it is available separately from browser tabs.

Enable menu bar access
In the app settings, turn on the menu bar icon if you want ChatGPT one click away at the top of the screen.
Change shortcut conflicts
If Option+Space conflicts with another app, input method, or keyboard layout, change or disable it in ChatGPT app settings.
The browser version still works fine
chatgpt.com works in Safari, Chrome, Edge, or Firefox on Mac. Your history is stored with your account, so switching between app and browser does not lose conversations.
Uninstalling does not delete your account
Drag ChatGPT from Applications to the Trash to remove the app. Your account and chat history remain available from chatgpt.com and the mobile apps.
