ChatGPT can fail because of a local browser problem, a stale login session, a VPN route, an app issue, or an OpenAI service incident. Start by checking whether ChatGPT is down, then move through local fixes.
Does this affect you?
Use this for ChatGPT on chatgpt.com and the iOS, Android, Windows, or Mac apps when it will not load, spins forever, shows an error, or logs you out unexpectedly.
Check whether ChatGPT is actually down
Do this first if the problem suddenly affects more than one device.
- Open status.openai.com in a browser.
- Look for an incident affecting ChatGPT specifically. API-only incidents may not explain ChatGPT app problems, and ChatGPT incidents may not affect developer API calls.
- If the status page reports degraded performance or elevated errors, wait and check back. Reloading repeatedly usually will not help.
- If the status page is normal, continue with local troubleshooting.
Fix it on your end
These steps clear most browser and app issues.
- Clear cache and cookies for chatgpt.com, then reload. This fixes many blank pages, login loops, and stuck loading screens.
- Open ChatGPT in a private or incognito window. If it works there, your normal browser profile has a cookie, cache, or extension problem.
- Disable extensions one at a time, especially ad blockers, privacy tools, VPN extensions, and script blockers.
- Try another browser. If ChatGPT works there, the original browser is the issue.
- Turn off your VPN and reload. Some VPN endpoints trigger extra checks or rate limits.
- Sign out and back in to refresh your login session.
- Restart the mobile or desktop app, update it from the app store, or restart the device if the app is stuck.
More control
Some errors are temporary overload
Messages about capacity, high demand, or something going wrong may be temporary. Regenerating a response or starting a new chat can clear one-off failures when there is no wider incident.
Features can fail separately
Text chat, image generation, voice mode, file uploads, and search can run on different systems. Check the status page for the specific feature if only one part of ChatGPT is broken.
Device-specific problems need local updates
If only one phone or computer has the issue, update the ChatGPT app, update the browser, check OS updates, and test the same account on another device.
