How to Use ChatGPT to Build a Chatbot for Your Website

Adding ChatGPT to a website usually means either using a no-code AI chat widget powered by OpenAI models or building a custom chatbot with OpenAI’s API. The widget path is faster; the API path gives more control.

Does this affect you?

Use this if you run a small website, service business, or online shop and want a chatbot that answers visitor questions without hiring a full development team.

Use a no-code chatbot widget service

This is the quickest path for nontechnical site owners.

  1. Search for a ChatGPT website chatbot widget or AI chatbot builder and compare pricing, privacy, and free trial limits.
  2. Create a chatbot in the service dashboard.
  3. Train it on your content by letting it crawl your website or by uploading FAQs, product lists, return policies, service pages, and support documents.
  4. Customize the chatbot name, greeting, color, and placement.
  5. Copy the embed code snippet, usually JavaScript.
  6. Paste it before the closing body tag, or use the custom code area in WordPress, Wix, Shopify, Squarespace, or your site builder.
  7. Save and reload the website to confirm the chat bubble appears.

Build it yourself with OpenAI tools

This takes more setup but gives stronger control over behavior and data.

  • No-code Custom GPT: With a paid ChatGPT plan, create a GPT, add business instructions and knowledge files, then share the GPT link. This opens in ChatGPT and is not the same as embedding a widget on your site.
  • Embedded website chatbot: Use OpenAI’s API with a custom or open-source chat widget. This requires developer setup and API billing.
  • For new builds, use current OpenAI platform tools such as the Responses API and file search rather than old tutorials built around retired APIs.
  • Connect the API to your approved business documents so the bot answers from your FAQ, policies, and product information.
  • Test with real customer questions before making it public.

More control

Compare pricing models

No-code widgets usually charge monthly by conversations or message volume. The API route charges per use. Low-traffic sites may pay less with API usage, while busy sites need careful cost controls.

The bot only knows what you give it

It will not magically know hours, prices, return rules, shipping timelines, or service areas unless those details are in the content you upload or crawl.

Set human handoff limits

Unless connected to an order or booking system, the bot cannot check a specific customer’s order or live availability. Make it clear when visitors should contact a person.

Review chat logs

Most services keep conversation logs. Read them regularly to find unanswered questions, confusing replies, and missing site content.
