Is ChatGPT Safe? What Happens to Your Data

ChatGPT is generally safe for everyday questions, but safe and private are not the same thing. Consumer chats are stored on OpenAI servers unless deleted or handled through privacy controls, and some data settings affect whether conversations may help improve models.

Does this affect you?

Use this for ChatGPT Free, Plus, and Pro on web, desktop, or mobile. Business, Team, and Enterprise accounts often use different default data terms.

What happens to your data by default

These are the normal consumer-account basics.

  • Conversations are stored on OpenAI servers and appear in chat history unless you delete them or use a temporary mode.
  • Consumer conversations may be used to improve models unless you turn that setting off.
  • OpenAI says it does not sell personal data, but conversation content can be reviewed in limited cases such as abuse, safety, or service improvement.
  • Business, Team, and Enterprise plans usually have stricter data handling and are commonly excluded from training by default under business terms.

How to lock down what happens to your chats

A few settings meaningfully change the defaults.

  1. Open Settings > Data Controls in ChatGPT.
  2. Turn off Improve the model for everyone to stop new chats from being used for model improvement going forward.
  3. Use Temporary Chat for one-off conversations you do not want saved to history.
  4. Delete a specific conversation from the chat menu when needed.
  5. Use Delete all chats in Data Controls to clear chat history.
  6. Use Settings > Account > Delete account only if you want a broader account deletion process.

More control

Avoid true sensitive identifiers

Do not paste full Social Security numbers, passwords, PINs, full payment card numbers, medical record numbers, or private data about other people unless your organization and plan explicitly allow it.

Memory is separate from chat history

ChatGPT can store long-term memories such as preferences or ongoing projects if Memory is enabled. View, edit, or disable it under Settings > Personalization > Memory.

ChatGPT does not have background access by default

It only knows what you type, upload, show it in a session, or connect with permission. It does not silently read your files, apps, or browser history.
