A capture card that does not appear in OBS, shows no signal, or is missing from Windows usually comes down to cabling order, drivers, USB bandwidth, HDCP protection, or a poorly seated PCIe card.
These steps apply to external USB capture cards and internal PCIe capture cards on Windows.
Does This Affect You?
Use this if your console, camera, OBS source, passthrough display, or Windows Device Manager does not recognize the capture card correctly.
Check the Cable Setup
- Connect the console or camera to the capture card IN or Source port.
- Connect the capture card OUT or TV port to the monitor or TV if using passthrough.
- Connect the capture card to the PC with its original USB cable when possible.
- Plug directly into a rear motherboard USB port instead of a hub or front-panel port.
- If the source is a streaming box, Blu-ray player, or protected console screen, remember HDCP can intentionally block capture.
Fix Drivers and Capture Software
- Open Device Manager.
- Look under Sound, video and game controllers and Universal Serial Bus controllers.
- If the card has a warning icon, uninstall the device, then unplug and reconnect it.
- Install the latest driver and capture software from Elgato, AVerMedia, Razer, or the card manufacturer.
- Restart the PC after installation.
- In OBS, add a Video Capture Device source and choose the card from the dropdown.
Reseat an Internal PCIe Capture Card
Internal PC work carries risk. Shut the PC down, unplug it from the wall, ground yourself on unpainted metal, and handle the card by the edges only.
- Open the case with the PC fully unplugged.
- Check that the card is fully seated and the PCIe latch is closed.
- Remove and reinstall the card evenly if needed.
- Check any extra power connector the card requires.
- Close the case, reconnect power, and check Device Manager again.
Deeper Checks
- Move other high-bandwidth USB devices away from the same controller group.
- Try USB 2.0 as a test if USB 3.0 compatibility seems flaky.
- Test the card on another PC. If it fails there too after correct drivers and cabling, the card may have failed.
- Check warranty before replacing it.
