Canon Printer Printing Blank Pages: How to Fix It

Canon printer producing a blank sheet

A Canon printer that feeds paper normally but prints blank pages usually has one of three causes: protective tape left on a cartridge, a print setting that sends no visible content, or clogged nozzles that prevent ink from reaching the page.

Does this affect you?

Use this guide if pages come out blank or nearly blank while the printer otherwise sounds normal and does not show a clear support code.

Check protective tape and cartridge seating

This is the first thing to check after installing new ink.

  1. Open the printer cover so the cartridge carriage moves into access position.
  2. Remove each cartridge and check for orange or clear tape over the contacts or nozzle area.
  3. Remove any tape completely.
  4. Reinsert the cartridge firmly until it clicks or seats fully.
  5. Close the cover and print a test page.

Check print job settings

A document or print setting can make the page appear blank even when the printer is functioning.

  1. Reopen the file and confirm the selected page range contains real content.
  2. Check the print dialog page range and avoid printing only a blank end page.
  3. Switch from draft or very light grayscale settings to standard or high quality.
  4. Confirm the paper size matches the paper in the tray so content is not shifted outside the printable area.

Run nozzle check and head cleaning

If cartridges and settings are fine, the printhead may be clogged.

  1. Open Canon IJ Printer Utility or the driver Maintenance tab.
  2. Run Print Nozzle Check Pattern.
  3. Compare the result to the on-screen sample. Large gaps or blank output point to clogged nozzles.
  4. Run Cleaning, then print another nozzle check. Repeat two or three times at most before seeking support because cleaning uses ink.

More control

Other brands use a similar order

HP, Epson, and Brother inkjets follow the same logic: check tape and seating first, then settings, then nozzle checks and cleaning. The exact utility name changes by brand.

Brother laser blank pages are different

A Brother laser printer printing blank pages often points to a toner sealing strip or toner/drum issue rather than ink nozzles.
