Brother laser printers track the drum unit separately from the toner cartridge. The drum transfers toner onto the page, and it lasts much longer than toner. Messages such as Drum End Soon, Replace Drum, or Drum! mean the drum counter or drum unit needs attention.

Use this guide if a Brother laser printer shows a drum warning after replacing toner, after installing a new drum, or when print quality starts declining. Do not confuse a drum warning with a toner warning; they refer to different parts in the same compartment.
Reset the drum counter if you already replaced the drum
Brother printers usually do not reset the drum page counter automatically. Reset it only after installing a new drum unit.
- On touchscreen models, open Settings > All Settings > Machine Info, then look for Parts Life or Reset Menu.
- Select Drum and confirm Reset or Yes.
- On button-only models, the reset often involves opening the front cover and holding Go, Clear, or another model-specific button until the indicator pattern changes. Check the exact model manual if the display does not guide you.
- Close the cover and print a test page to confirm the warning cleared.
Replace the drum unit
Replace the drum first if the warning is new and you have not installed a replacement. This involves handling internal printer parts, so turn the printer off, avoid forcing anything, and check support if the device is under warranty.
The green drum surface is light-sensitive and easy to damage. Do not touch it with your fingers, and do not leave it exposed to bright light for more than a few minutes. Fingerprints or light damage can leave permanent marks on printed pages.
- Turn the printer off and open the front cover.
- Remove the toner and drum assembly. On many Brother models, the toner cartridge sits inside the drum unit.
- Press the release lever to separate the toner cartridge from the old drum.
- Slide the toner cartridge into the new drum until it clicks.
- Reinstall the combined assembly, close the cover, and reset the drum counter using the steps above.
More control
Drums last longer than toner
A drum may be rated for tens of thousands of pages, while toner is often only a few thousand. If drum warnings appear frequently, double-check the display actually says drum and not toner.
Drum End Soon is an early warning
Drum End Soon usually gives you time to order a replacement. Replace Drum or a flashing drum error is more likely to interrupt printing.
Do not reset without replacing
Resetting the counter without a new drum makes the printer believe the old drum is fresh. Print quality can then deteriorate without another useful warning.
Third-party drums can cause recognition trouble
Non-genuine or refurbished drums may not reset or report correctly on some Brother models. If the error persists after a reset, the replacement drum compatibility is worth checking first.
