How to Fix a Blue Screen on Windows 10

A blue screen on Windows 10 means Windows hit a serious problem and restarted to protect the system. It may happen once after a bad driver load, or it may repeat every time you start the PC, open a certain app, connect hardware, or install updates.

This guide applies to Windows 10 desktops and laptops that show a Blue Screen of Death, also called a BSOD or stop error.

Does This Affect You?

A Windows blue screen looks frightening, but it does not automatically mean the computer is ruined. Windows stops because a driver, hardware component, damaged system file, or low-level service has put the operating system in a state where it cannot continue safely.

The most useful clue is the stop code on the crash screen. It may be a phrase such as MEMORY_MANAGEMENT, CRITICAL_PROCESS_DIED, or IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL, or it may be a hexadecimal code. Write that down first, then work through the fixes below in order.

Find the Stop Code and Check What Changed

Before replacing drivers or running repairs, narrow the timing. Blue screens often start immediately after a specific update, device, app, or setting change.

  1. When the blue screen appears, note the stop code shown near the bottom of the screen. If the PC restarts too quickly, open Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update > View update history, or open Reliability Monitor from the Start menu and select the crash entry.
  2. Think back to what changed just before the crashes began: a new graphics driver, printer, USB device, storage drive, Windows update, antivirus tool, game, VPN, or hardware upgrade.
  3. If a driver update looks suspicious, right-click Start, open Device Manager, expand the affected device category, right-click the device, and choose Properties.
  4. Open the Driver tab and click Roll Back Driver if the button is available. Restart and test the PC again.
  5. If a Windows update was installed right before the problem started, go to Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update > View update history > Uninstall updates, remove the newest update, and restart.

Test Your Memory and Check the Drive

Faulty RAM and storage problems are common causes of recurring blue screens, especially if the crashes happen randomly instead of only inside one app.

  1. Open the Start menu, search for Windows Memory Diagnostic, and run it.
  2. Choose Restart now and check for problems. Windows will reboot, test the memory, and show results after the next startup.

The next checks involve the inside of the computer. Read this first:

  • Disconnect the computer from power before opening a desktop case.
  • Do only the steps described here. Do not force clips, connectors, panels, or parts.
  • If the PC is under warranty, or you are unsure, stop and contact the manufacturer or a repair shop.

These instructions are provided for general troubleshooting and may not fit every model. You continue at your own risk.

  1. If the memory test reports errors, shut the PC down fully and unplug it.
  2. Ground yourself by touching an unpainted metal part of the case, or use an anti-static wrist strap.
  3. Handle RAM only by the edges. Avoid the gold contacts and chips.
  4. Reseat the RAM by removing it and pressing it firmly back into place. If the PC has more than one RAM stick, test one stick at a time to identify a failing module.
  5. After memory checks, open Command Prompt as administrator and run wmic diskdrive get status. A healthy drive usually reports OK.
  6. Then run chkdsk C: /f /r. If Windows asks to schedule the scan for the next restart, type Y, restart, and let the scan finish.

Repair System Files and Update Components

If the stop code does not clearly point to one device, repair Windows system files next. This is especially useful after failed updates, sudden power loss, disk errors, or repeated crashes during startup.

  1. Right-click Start and open Command Prompt, Terminal, or PowerShell as administrator.
  2. Run sfc /scannow and wait for it to finish. This can take 10 to 20 minutes.
  3. Next, run DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth. Keep the PC online while DISM downloads repair files if needed.
  4. Restart the computer after both commands complete.
  5. If the blue screens appear immediately after update attempts, troubleshoot Windows Update separately before trying more invasive repairs.

More Checks for Persistent Blue Screens

If the crash keeps returning, use these deeper checks to isolate whether the cause is a startup driver, heat, firmware, or a specific crash dump.

Start in Safe Mode if Windows Keeps Crashing

If you cannot use Windows long enough to troubleshoot, enter Safe Mode. Hold the power button during startup two or three times in a row until Automatic Repair appears. Then choose Advanced options > Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Settings > Restart, and press 4 for Safe Mode.

Safe Mode loads fewer drivers and services, so it may stay stable long enough to uninstall a bad driver, remove a recent app, copy important files, or run the repair commands above.

Rule Out Overheating

Blue screens that happen during gaming, video editing, long calls, heavy browser use, or hot weather can come from heat. Make sure vents are clear, fans are spinning, and dust is not blocking airflow. If your PC maker or motherboard vendor provides a temperature tool, check whether CPU or GPU temperatures spike before the crash.

Inspect the Crash Dump

Windows often saves small crash files in C:WindowsMinidump. Microsoft WinDbg, available through Microsoft, can open those files and identify the driver or system component involved. This is useful when the same stop code appears repeatedly and basic repairs do not reveal the cause.

Check for BIOS or Firmware Updates

Some blue screens are fixed outside Windows, especially problems involving storage controllers, graphics hardware, newer processors, or sleep and wake behavior. Visit the support page for your exact PC or motherboard model and check for BIOS, UEFI, chipset, and firmware updates. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions carefully, because interrupting a firmware update can make a PC unbootable.
