Best Settings for Competitive Gaming: A Practical Setup Guide

Competitive settings are about stable frame rate, low input lag, and clear visibility. That is a different goal from single-player graphics settings, where image quality often matters more than responsiveness.

This guide applies to PC gaming, especially shooters, battle royales, MOBAs, and other fast competitive games.

Use this if you want settings that help consistency and reaction time instead of simply making the game look prettier.

In-game graphics settings that matter

  • Lower or disable shadows because they cost a lot of performance and rarely help competitive visibility.
  • Turn off motion blur and depth of field because they hide motion and add cinematic blur.
  • Lower or disable ambient occlusion, volumetric lighting, and god rays.
  • Keep texture quality reasonably high if your GPU has enough VRAM.
  • Turn off ray tracing for competitive play.

Ray tracing can look excellent, but the frame-rate cost usually does not help you win fights or react faster.

Display and system settings

  • Turn off V-Sync, or use NVIDIA Reflex or a careful frame cap if the game supports it.
  • Cap FPS slightly below your monitor’s refresh rate for smoother frame pacing.
  • Enable Game Mode on your TV or monitor.
  • Set Windows power mode to High Performance or Best Performance while gaming.
  • Close browser tabs, overlays, recording tools, and other apps using CPU or GPU.

V-Sync can reduce tearing, but it often adds input lag. Competitive players usually prefer lower latency over perfect tear-free presentation.

Refresh rate and input devices

Moving from 60Hz to 144Hz or higher is one of the most noticeable upgrades for competitive play because the screen updates more often and input feels more immediate.

A wired mouse, keyboard, or controller can reduce small amounts of input lag compared with wireless. It is not magic, but competitive setups often remove every avoidable delay.

Do not waste frames you cannot see

If your monitor is 144Hz, rendering 300 FPS may not provide visible benefit on that display and can create inconsistent GPU load. After you hit a stable cap, spend extra headroom on settings that do not hurt visibility, such as texture quality.
