AirPlay mirroring depends on discovery and a strong local network. If Apple TV does not appear, freezes, or disconnects, start with Wi-Fi matching and Apple TV AirPlay settings before assuming the devices are broken.

Use this for Apple TV HD and Apple TV 4K when mirroring from iPhone, iPad, or Mac with AirPlay.
Confirm both devices are on the same Wi-Fi network
This is the most common reason Apple TV does not show as an option.
- On Apple TV, open Settings > Network and note the Wi-Fi network name, or confirm Ethernet is connected to the same home network.
- On iPhone or iPad, open Settings > Wi-Fi and confirm the exact same network name.
- Avoid guest networks and separate router bands that isolate devices from each other.
- If you use mesh Wi-Fi, confirm both devices are on the same underlying network rather than isolated bands.
- Open Control Center on iPhone or iPad, tap Screen Mirroring, and look for the Apple TV.
Turn on AirPlay in Apple TV settings
AirPlay can be disabled or restricted on the Apple TV itself.
- On Apple TV, go to Settings > AirPlay and HomeKit.
- Make sure AirPlay is On.
- Check Require Code or access settings. If a code is required, the TV may show a temporary code when you connect.
- Start mirroring again from iPhone, iPad, or Mac and enter the onscreen code if prompted.
Restart both devices
Use this when Apple TV appears but mirroring fails, freezes, or drops.
- On iPhone or iPad, open Settings > General > Shut Down, wait briefly, then turn it back on.
- On Apple TV, open Settings > System > Restart. On older models, unplug power for about 30 seconds.
- After both devices reconnect to Wi-Fi, try Screen Mirroring again from Control Center.
More control
Update both sides
AirPlay issues can appear after only one device updates. Check iPhone or iPad under Settings > General > Software Update and Apple TV under Settings > System > Software Updates.
Reduce Wi-Fi interference
Mirroring sends a live screen feed and is more demanding than ordinary casting. Move closer to the router if video stutters or freezes.
Use in-app AirPlay when possible
If you only need a video or photo, the AirPlay button inside an app is often more reliable than mirroring the entire screen. Keep Bluetooth on as well, since it can help devices discover each other.
