If you are already signed in, changing your Apple ID password is a quick security update. It is different from recovering a password when you cannot sign in at all.
Does this affect you?
Use this when you can still access your Apple ID on iPhone, iPad, Mac, iCloud for Windows, iCloud.com, or appleid.apple.com and want to update the password proactively.
Change it on iPhone or iPad
This is the fastest route when the device is in your hand.
- Open Settings.
- Tap your name at the top.
- Open Sign-In & Security.
- Tap Change Password.
- Enter the device passcode if asked.
- Enter the new Apple ID password twice and tap Change.
Change it on a Mac
Use System Settings on macOS.
- Open the Apple menu and choose System Settings.
- Select your name in the sidebar.
- Open Sign-In & Security.
- Choose Change Password.
- Enter the Mac login password if prompted.
- Enter the new Apple ID password twice and save the change.
Change it on Windows or iCloud.com
Use the web when you are away from an Apple device.
- Open iCloud for Windows and choose Account Details, then the Apple ID account page, or go directly to appleid.apple.com.
- Sign in and complete any trusted-device or phone verification.
- Open Sign-In and Security.
- Select Password and follow the prompts to set a new one.
- Sign back in on devices and apps that ask for the updated password.
More control
Expect other devices to ask again
After changing the Apple ID password, iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple TV, Apple Watch, iCloud, Apple Pay, and App Store services may ask you to re-enter it. That is normal.
Use a unique password
Apple ID protects iCloud backups, Find My, purchases, photos, and payment details. Use Apple’s suggested strong password or a password manager instead of reusing a weaker site password.
Enable two-factor authentication
Turn on two-factor authentication under Sign-In & Security if it is not already active. If you cannot sign in at all, use Apple’s forgot-password recovery path instead of this change-password flow.
