If someone tells you to pay a bill, fine, debt, tax, emergency, or support fee with Apple Gift Cards, it is a scam. Apple Gift Cards are for Apple purchases, not outside payments.

Recognize the pattern
No legitimate organization settles a bill with gift card codes.
- Apple Gift Cards can be redeemed for Apple products, services, apps, subscriptions, and content. They are not a payment method for taxes, bail, utilities, tech support, debt, grants, or family emergencies.
- Apple Support will not ask you to buy gift cards to verify, unlock, or protect an account or device.
- Once the scammer has the code, they can redeem the balance without the physical card or receipt.
- Common setups include fake tech support popups, government impersonators, debt collectors, romance scams, utility threats, and relatives supposedly in urgent trouble.
- If a store employee asks why you are buying many gift cards, pause and listen. Retail workers are often trained to spot this scam.
What to do if you shared the codes
Fast reporting gives the best chance, though refunds are not guaranteed.
- Contact Apple Support directly through support.apple.com or the Apple Support app. Do not use a number the scammer gave you.
- Keep the physical cards and receipts. Apple will need card numbers or proof of purchase to investigate.
- File a report at reportfraud.ftc.gov.
- If you bought the cards with a credit or debit card, contact the bank or card issuer to flag the account for related fraud.
- If the scam involved a family emergency, call that person or another trusted family member using a number you already know.
More control
Apple cannot simply reverse redeemed codes
Gift card value is designed to be spent by whoever redeems the code first. That is why scammers push this payment method so hard.
Report impersonation attempts
Suspicious emails claiming to be from Apple can be reported to Apple’s phishing-report address. Other scam attempts can be reported through Apple Support or Report a Problem where appropriate.
Share the simple rule
A useful warning for family members is: Apple Gift Cards buy Apple things only. They never pay real-world bills or emergencies.
