Android Phone Says No Service: How to Fix It

Fixing Android phone no service illustration

No service or Emergency calls only means the phone cannot connect to the carrier network for normal calls, texts, or data. The cause is often a temporary radio issue, carrier outage, SIM problem, eSIM setting, or account problem.

These steps apply to Android phones with physical SIM or eSIM, including Samsung Galaxy and stock Android devices.

Does This Affect You?

Use this if signal bars disappear and calls or texts will not go through. This is different from having signal but no mobile data.

Reset the Connection

  1. Swipe down from the top to open Quick Settings.
  2. Turn on Airplane mode.
  3. Wait about 15 seconds.
  4. Turn Airplane mode off and let the phone search for service.
  5. If service does not return, restart the phone.
  6. Check whether another phone on the same carrier nearby has service.
  7. Move near a window, outside, or to a stronger-signal area and test again.

If other phones on the same carrier also have no service, check the carrier outage page or app. The phone may be fine.

Check SIM or eSIM

  1. Power off the phone.
  2. Remove the physical SIM tray with a SIM tool or paperclip.
  3. Check the SIM for dirt or damage and wipe the gold contacts with a dry cloth.
  4. Reinsert the SIM firmly and power the phone on.
  5. For eSIM, open Settings > Connections > SIM manager, or Network & internet > SIMs.
  6. Confirm the eSIM line is active and not disabled.
  7. If possible, test the SIM in another phone.

If the SIM fails in another phone too, the SIM or carrier account is probably the issue.

Update Settings and Check the Account

  1. Open Settings > System > System update, or Samsung Settings > Software update.
  2. Install any pending update.
  3. Check for manufacturer or carrier configuration updates where your phone offers them.
  4. Log into the carrier app or website and confirm the plan is active and paid.
  5. If you recently switched carriers, check Access Point Names under SIM or mobile network settings.

When to Contact the Carrier

Call or chat with the carrier if the SIM is active but service still does not return. They can refresh provisioning, replace a failed SIM, fix an expired prepaid plan, or confirm a local outage from their side.
