Google Messages can move suspected scam, promotional, or suspicious texts into a Spam and blocked folder instead of your normal inbox. That is useful for junk, but it can also hide a real delivery code, appointment reminder, or business message.
These steps apply to Android phones using Google Messages with spam protection enabled, including Pixel, Samsung, and Motorola phones.
Does This Affect You?
Use this if an expected text never appeared, or if you want to see where Google Messages stores spam and blocked conversations. Messages in this folder usually do not trigger notifications or unread badges.
Find Spam and Blocked
- Open Google Messages.
- Tap your profile picture or the three-dot menu in the top right.
- Tap Spam and blocked.
- Review conversations that were filtered as spam or blocked manually.
Check this folder when you are waiting for a one-time passcode, delivery update, appointment reminder, or first message from a business you have not texted before.
Recover a Legitimate Message
- Open Google Messages > Spam and blocked.
- Tap the conversation you want to recover.
- Tap Not spam, or tap Unblock if the sender was blocked.
- Return to the inbox and confirm the conversation moved back.
Marking a conversation as not spam also helps the filter treat that sender more accurately in the future.
Adjust Spam Protection
Turn Filtering Off
Open Google Messages settings, go to Spam protection, and turn it off if filtering is too aggressive. Spam will then arrive in the normal inbox, so most people are better served by leaving it on and checking the folder occasionally.
Report Real Spam
Open the spam conversation, use the menu, and choose Report spam. This usually blocks the sender and helps improve filtering.
Know Common False Positives
Short codes, verification texts, and one-way business messages are common false positives because the sender may be unfamiliar and there is no conversation history.
