How to Clear Cache on Android

Clearing cache on Android illustration

Cache files are temporary files apps store so they do not have to download or rebuild the same information repeatedly. Clearing cache can fix stuck apps, stale content, slow loading, and some storage surprises without removing your account or saved app data.

These steps apply to Samsung, Pixel, Motorola, and most Android phones.

Does This Affect You?

Use this if an app is glitchy, slow, showing old information, or using storage you cannot explain. Cache clearing is safe and reversible because apps rebuild cache as needed.

Clear Cache for One App

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap Apps.
  3. Choose the app you want to fix.
  4. Tap Storage or Storage usage.
  5. Tap Clear cache.
  6. Open the app and test it again.

This does not delete logins, settings, saved documents, or account data inside the app.

Clear Cache More Broadly

  1. Open Settings > Storage, or Samsung Battery and device care > Storage.
  2. Look for cached data, junk files, or a cleanup tool.
  3. Review what will be removed.
  4. Tap Clear, Delete, or Clean now.

Pixel and stock Android often avoid a single clear-everything cache button, while Samsung Device Care offers a broader cleanup option.

Cache vs. Clear Data

Clear Cache Is Temporary Files

Clear cache removes files the app can rebuild. It is the safe first step for most app issues.

Clear Data Is a Reset

Clear data or Clear storage resets the app. You may be logged out, settings may reset, and local-only data can be lost. Use it only when cache did not help and you understand the app’s backup situation.

Cache Builds Fast in Media Apps

Browsers, social media, maps, streaming, and image-heavy apps build cache quickly. Clearing it every few months is reasonable if storage gets tight.

Cache Is Not Always the Fix

If an app has a bug or the phone is almost full overall, clearing one app cache may not help. Check app updates and device storage too.
