When the Alexa app crashes, freezes, or shows generic errors, the problem is usually the phone app, cache, storage, or Amazon service connection. Your Echo devices and routines are stored with your Amazon account and should not need to be recreated.
These steps apply to the Alexa app on iPhone, iPad, Android phones, and Android tablets.
Does this affect you?
Use this if the Alexa app crashes on launch, hangs on loading, fails to show devices, or will not open routines and settings.
Force close, restart, and check for updates
A stuck background app process is the easiest cause to clear.
- Force close Alexa. On iPhone, swipe up and hold, then swipe the Alexa card away.
- On Android, open recent apps and swipe Alexa away.
- Restart the phone fully.
- Open the App Store or Google Play Store.
- Search for Alexa.
- Install any available update.
- Open Alexa again and test.
App updates matter because Amazon can change server-side behavior that older app versions do not handle well.
Clear the app’s cache and data on Android, or offload it on iPhone
This resets local app storage without deleting your smart home from Amazon’s servers.
- On Android, open Settings > Apps > Alexa > Storage.
- Tap Clear Cache first and test.
- If needed, tap Clear Data, then sign back in.
- On iPhone, open Settings > General > iPhone Storage.
- Select Alexa and tap Offload App.
- Reinstall the app and sign in if prompted.
- Wait a minute or two for devices and routines to resync.
A blank device list immediately after signing in can be normal while the app refreshes from Amazon.
Fully uninstall and reinstall
Use this when the app still will not open after cache or offload steps.
- Delete the Alexa app.
- Restart the phone.
- Install Alexa again from the official app store.
- Sign in with the same Amazon account.
- Let devices, routines, and smart home settings reappear.
Before spending time reinstalling, check Amazon service status. If Alexa services are down, the app may recover when Amazon fixes the outage.
If the app crashes while loading camera thumbnails or device lists, check phone storage and free at least 1 to 2 GB. If Alexa works on another phone with the same account, focus on the first phone’s OS, storage, beta app status, or corrupted install.
