A Whirlpool refrigerator leak is easiest to diagnose by location. Water under crisper drawers points to the defrost drain. Water on the floor often points to the water line, drain pan, door seal, leveling, or ice-maker supply.
These steps apply to Whirlpool bottom-freezer, side-by-side, and French-door refrigerators.

Interior puddles usually come from a clogged or frozen defrost drain. Floor puddles usually come from the supply line, drain pan, door gasket, leveling, ice maker line, or water inlet valve.
Clear the defrost drain
- Remove crisper drawers and look near the lower rear wall for the drain opening.
- Clear visible food debris gently.
- Flush the opening with warm, not boiling, water using a turkey baster or funnel.
- Use a flexible pipe cleaner or thin wire carefully if the clog is solid.
- Dry the area and check again after 24 hours.
Unplug the refrigerator before moving it or reaching behind it. Mop up water promptly, and keep outlets and cords dry. Do not pour boiling water into plastic drain parts because it can crack them.
Check the water line and drain pan
- With the refrigerator unplugged, pull it out and inspect the rear water supply line for drips.
- Check for cracked original plastic tubing or a loose fitting.
- Remove the front grille if needed and inspect the drain pan for cracks, overflow, or crooked seating.
- Check fridge and freezer door gaskets for gaps.
- Use a level to confirm the refrigerator is level front-to-back and side-to-side.
If the refrigerator has an ice maker, a hidden supply line inside the freezer wall can leak at a connection point. The inlet valve can also seep slowly even when water is not being dispensed.
If defrost drain, supply line, pan, gaskets, and leveling all check out but water returns, have a technician inspect the ice maker line and inlet valve.
