Induction Cooktop Not Recognizing Pan? How to Fix It

If an induction burner flashes, beeps, or says no pan even with cookware on the glass, the cooktop is not sensing a usable magnetic pan. Induction cooking depends on cookware compatibility as much as the cooktop itself.

These checks apply to induction cooktops and ranges from GE, Samsung, Bosch, Frigidaire, LG, and similar brands that use magnetic induction heating.

Does this affect you?

Induction burners create a magnetic field that heats the pan directly. If the pan does not respond magnetically, or if the sensor cannot detect enough of the pan base, the burner will refuse to heat. That behavior is intentional and protects the cooktop from running with the wrong cookware.

Check the cookware itself

Cookware compatibility is the most common reason an induction burner will not recognize a pan.

  • Use the magnet test. Hold a refrigerator magnet to the bottom of the pan. If it does not stick firmly, the pan is not induction-compatible enough.
  • Check the material. Cast iron and many magnetic stainless-steel pans work well. Aluminum, copper, glass, and most ceramic pans need a built-in magnetic base to work on induction.
  • Look for the induction symbol on the bottom of the cookware, usually a coil-like mark.
  • Make sure the base is flat. Warped, bowed, or domed cookware may not sit close enough to the glass for consistent detection.

The glass surface can remain hot from the pan after cooking even though induction glass does not glow. Watch the residual-heat indicator and avoid touching the surface until it is safe. Do not open the cooktop housing or remove it from the counter; the coils and electronics below the glass are high-voltage components.

Check pan size and placement on the burner

A compatible pan still has to be large enough and centered over the correct zone.

  • Center the pan on the marked burner circle or outline. Being off by an inch or two can put the base partly outside the sensor area.
  • Use a pan that meets the burner minimum size. A tiny saucepan may be too small for a large induction zone even if it is magnetic.
  • Dry the glass and the pan bottom. Water, grease, or food residue can make detection less stable on some cooktops.
  • Try the same pan on another burner. If it works elsewhere, one zone may have a sensor or coil problem.

Large griddles and unusual cookware may require a bridge-zone or flex-zone setting. If your cooktop has combined zones, activate that mode from the controls instead of relying only on pan placement.

Very thin stainless pans and older warped pans can become unreliable over time. They may still attract a magnet but not provide a strong, even response for the cooktop sensor.

If a known-good magnetic pan fails on every zone, or one specific zone refuses every pan while the others work, the issue is likely inside the cooktop. Stop at that point and call a qualified technician.
