Whirlpool dryers with electronic controls can store fault codes and run a service test mode. The same control platform is also used by many Maytag and Kenmore-badged dryers, so the diagnostic entry sequence is often similar across those machines.
Use this when the dryer has recently shown an error, will not heat, will not tumble, or you want to confirm whether a repair fixed the problem.

Diagnostic mode lets the dryer show stored faults and, on many models, briefly test major systems such as the drum motor, heating circuit, blower, and sensors. It is not a full repair by itself, but it gives you a better lead than troubleshooting only by symptom.
Enter diagnostic mode and view stored codes
The exact buttons and timing can vary, but this sequence works on many electronic-control Whirlpool, Maytag, and Kenmore-platform dryers.
- Make sure the dryer is plugged in, idle, empty, and the door is closed.
- Within eight seconds, press the same three control-panel buttons in the same order three times: 1-2-3, 1-2-3, 1-2-3. Use option buttons, not Power, Start, or Cancel unless your model manual says otherwise.
- If the dryer accepts the sequence, the display or indicator lights should change to show it is in service mode. If nothing happens, check the exact model manual because some panels use different timing or buttons.
- Press Start briefly to step through stored fault codes if your model supports that function.
- Write down every code before exiting. Some dryers clear or stop showing stored codes once you leave diagnostic mode.
Run the component test and exit
After the stored-code check, many models can briefly run selected components.
- With the dryer still in diagnostic mode, press Start again to begin the automated test sequence if the model supports it.
- Listen for the motor, blower, relay clicks, or heat circuit activity. A drum that does not move or a blower that stays silent helps narrow the fault even if no code was stored.
- Open the dryer door to exit diagnostic mode, or unplug the dryer for about a minute and reconnect it.
- If a fresh fault appears during the component test, look up that exact code using the dryer model number.
Diagnostic mode checks electrical and mechanical responses. It does not measure airflow through the house vent. If clothes take too long to dry and no fault appears, clean the lint screen, inspect the exhaust hose, and check the outside vent before assuming the dryer needs parts. Poor venting is one of the most common causes of slow drying.
If you clear a stored code and it comes back during the next normal cycle or another diagnostic run, consider the fault confirmed. Repeated clearing only hides the signal.
Call an appliance technician for codes related to the heating element, thermal fuse, main control board, or wiring if you are not trained to test those parts. Also stop if the dryer is under warranty or if the diagnostic result requires opening the cabinet.
