Gas Range Burner Flame Too Low? How to Fix a Weak Flame

A gas burner that lights but stays weak on high is often partially blocked at the visible burner ports or cap. If every burner is weak, the issue may be gas supply or conversion rather than a single dirty burner.

This applies to natural gas and propane ranges and cooktops from major brands.

Does this affect you?

Use this if one or more burners light but produce a small flame even with the knob turned to high.

Gas safety first

  • If you smell rotten eggs or gas, stop, leave the house, and call the gas utility or 911 from outside.
  • Do not flip switches or light flames if a leak is suspected.
  • Let burners cool completely before touching caps, grates, or heads.
  • Do not adjust gas lines, shutoff valves, regulators, or orifices yourself.
  • Never drill or widen burner ports.

Clean the burner cap and ports

  1. Turn the burner off and let it cool fully.
  2. Remove the grate.
  3. Lift off the burner cap.
  4. Inspect the small ports around the burner for food, grease, and cleaning residue.
  5. Clear ports with a straight pin, needle, or stiff toothbrush.
  6. Avoid toothpicks because they can break in the port.
  7. Wipe the cap and base with a damp cloth.
  8. Dry everything completely and reseat the cap evenly.
  9. Test the burner on high.

Check flame color and burner base

  • A healthy flame should be mostly blue with maybe a tiny yellow tip.
  • A yellow or orange flame after cleaning can mean poor air mixing or a supply issue.
  • Make sure the burner head and tube are seated correctly.
  • Check whether only one burner is weak or every burner is weak.
  • If the range uses propane, confirm it was converted with the correct orifices.

If all burners are weak, or the problem began after installation, fuel conversion, or gas line work, call a licensed gas appliance technician. Regulator pressure and gas supply checks require proper tools and training.
