Dishwasher Buttons Not Working? How to Fix an Unresponsive Panel

If a dishwasher has power but ignores button presses, the cause is often Control Lock, a frozen control board, or a door latch switch that says the door is still open.

This applies to Whirlpool, Frigidaire, Bosch, KitchenAid, Maytag, and similar dishwashers with button or touch controls.

Does this affect you?

Use this if the display lights up but buttons do not beep, change lights, or start a cycle.

Check for Control Lock

  1. Look for a padlock icon or a label such as Control Lock, Lock, or Hold 3 Sec.
  2. Press and hold the lock button, or the paired buttons listed in the manual, for about 3 seconds.
  3. Wait for the beep or for the lock icon to disappear.
  4. Try Start or another button again.
  5. If you do not know the shortcut, check the quick-start label inside the door or search the model number.

Before doing hands-on checks, turn the dishwasher off at the wall switch or breaker. If you will check hoses or water connections, shut off the water supply too.

  • Do only the accessible checks described here.
  • Do not work around standing water with power on.
  • If the dishwasher is under warranty, smells hot or electrical, leaks heavily, or needs internal door or pump work, call support or an appliance technician.

Reset the control panel

  1. Turn off the dishwasher breaker or unplug it if the outlet is accessible.
  2. Leave power off for a full 60 seconds.
  3. Restore power.
  4. Wait 10 to 15 seconds for the display to wake up.
  5. Try the buttons again.

A one-time software lockup can clear with a real power reset. If it works for a day and then freezes again, the control board may be failing.

Check the door latch switch

  • Open and close the door firmly until it clicks.
  • Pull gently on the closed door to see whether it pops loose.
  • Look for a loose strike plate where the latch catches.
  • If the latch feels sloppy or never clicks, it may need adjustment or replacement.
  • If the latch is mechanically fine but the panel stays dead, the switch behind it may have failed.

Flat touch panels can wear out after years of wet or greasy use. If some buttons work and others do not, the membrane is suspect. If no reset helps and the latch is good, a technician can test the panel and control board.
