An air fryer that looks completely dead is often being stopped by its own basket safety switch, a dead kitchen outlet, or a tripped GFCI. If those checks pass, an internal thermal cutoff may have opened after overheating.
These steps apply to countertop air fryers from Ninja, Cosori, Instant, and similar brands with a basket, drawer, or drop-down cooking compartment.

Use this if pressing power does nothing: no display, no light, no fan, and no heat. Start with the outside checks before assuming the appliance failed internally.
Quick checks
- Push the basket or drawer all the way in until it seats firmly. Many air fryers will not power the controls or heater unless the basket interlock is engaged.
- Try a different outlet, preferably one you already know works.
- Look for a nearby GFCI outlet with Reset and Test buttons. Kitchen counter outlets are often protected by a GFCI that can trip silently.
- Plug a phone charger or lamp into the same outlet to confirm power is present.
- Inspect the cord for cuts, fraying, melted spots, or looseness where it enters the appliance. Stop using it if the cord is damaged.
The steps below involve basic user checks only. Unplug the appliance before inspecting, cleaning, or removing accessible parts. If the appliance uses water, shut off the water supply before working near hoses or filters.
- Do not open sealed housings, remove internal panels, bypass safety switches, or force stuck parts.
- Keep towels and a shallow pan ready when opening any drain or water filter area.
- If the appliance is under warranty, smells electrical, has a damaged cord, leaks heavily, or you are unsure, stop and contact the manufacturer or a qualified technician.
Check for a tripped thermal cutoff
If the outlet works and the basket is fully seated, think about the last use. Air fryers can overheat when vents are blocked, the unit is pushed against a wall, it is run empty for testing, or it sits under a cabinet with poor airflow.
- Unplug the air fryer and let it cool for at least one hour.
- Try it once on a confirmed working outlet.
- Do not open the housing or try to reach the heating element.
- If it still has no power, the internal thermal fuse or another internal component may have failed.
Most air fryer thermal cutoffs are not reset buttons. They are safety parts inside the appliance, and consumer air fryers are usually not designed for user repair.
Check warranty coverage before replacing it. Many air fryers include a 1 to 2 year manufacturer warranty, and opening the appliance can void replacement coverage.
For a failed internal cutoff, board, or heating component, replacement is often more practical than paid repair because labor can approach the price of a new unit. Prevent a repeat failure by keeping several inches of clearance around the vents and avoiding empty heat runs.
