A Ring doorbell can be silent indoors for three different reasons: phone notification settings, a plug-in Ring Chime problem, or an existing wired chime compatibility issue.
These steps apply to Ring Video Doorbells used with phone notifications, Ring Chime accessories, or original wired household chimes.

Check phone and app notifications
- Open the Ring app.
- Tap the three-line menu.
- Open Notification Settings.
- Select the doorbell.
- Confirm Doorbell Rings notifications are enabled.
- Open your phone’s notification settings for Ring.
- Make sure notifications are allowed and not silent.
- Check Do Not Disturb, Focus, or sleep modes.
- Have someone press the doorbell while you watch the phone.
If a banner appears silently, the problem is phone sound or notification behavior, not the doorbell.
Fix a Ring Chime that is not sounding
- Confirm the Chime is plugged directly into a wall outlet.
- Check that its light is on.
- Open the Ring app.
- Go to Devices and select the Chime.
- Open Device Health and confirm Wi-Fi is connected.
- Open Chime Settings.
- Raise the volume slider.
- Confirm the Chime is linked to the correct doorbell.
Stand near the Chime and press the doorbell. If it is silent there too, focus on the Chime rather than your phone or wired chime.
Fix an existing wired chime
A battery-only Ring doorbell that is not connected to low-voltage doorbell wiring cannot trigger an old wired chime. Use a Ring Chime or phone alerts for battery-only installations.
- Check whether the chime is mechanical or digital.
- Confirm the doorbell transformer is within the required voltage range, commonly 16 to 24VAC for many Ring models.
- Open Device Health and look for chime compatibility warnings.
- Install the required chime kit or Pro Power Kit if your model needs one.
- Call an electrician if you are not comfortable working near the doorbell transformer.
Also check Chime Snooze under Ring notification settings. A scheduled snooze can silence alerts and make a working setup look broken.
