Short cycling means the HVAC system starts, runs briefly, stops, and repeats. It wastes energy, wears equipment, and often leaves the house uncomfortable.
These steps apply to Nest Learning Thermostat, Nest Thermostat 2020, and Nest Thermostat E connected to central heating or cooling.
Does this affect you?
Use this if heating or cooling turns on and off every few minutes instead of running a normal cycle. The cause is often airflow or settings, not the thermostat hardware.
Check the air filter and vents
A restricted filter is the easiest and most common fix.
- Find the furnace or air handler filter.
- Pull it out and inspect it.
- Replace it if it is gray, dusty, clogged, or blocks light.
- Use the same filter size.
- Match the airflow arrow on the filter frame.
- Walk through the home and check supply and return vents.
- Move furniture, rugs, or curtains blocking airflow.
- Set a reminder to check the filter monthly.
Depending on pets, dust, and filter type, replacement may be needed every 1 to 3 months.
Check equipment settings and thermostat placement
- Open the Google Home app.
- Tap the thermostat.
- Go to Settings > Equipment.
- Confirm the system type matches your actual HVAC setup.
- Review recent schedule or Home/Away routine changes.
- Avoid very frequent small temperature changes.
- Check whether the thermostat is near sun, lamps, kitchens, vents, exterior doors, or drafts.
- Confirm only one thermostat is controlling the same equipment unless the system is designed for zones.
Bad placement can make Nest think the room changed temperature faster than the rest of the home did, which can trigger rapid cycling.
When to call an HVAC technician
If filters, vents, settings, and placement all check out, the issue may be mechanical. Low refrigerant, an oversized AC or furnace, a failing furnace limit switch, or a compressor problem can all cause short cycling.
If short cycling began right after HVAC service, call the company that did the work and ask them to recheck the setup. The issue may be a new equipment setting, wiring change, or repair side effect.
