A Nest thermostat that is completely dark usually has a power or charging issue. A Nest with the screen on but no heat or AC points more toward settings, wiring, compatibility, or HVAC equipment.
These steps apply to Nest Learning Thermostat 3rd and 4th gen models and the Nest Thermostat 2020 mirror-display model.

Use this if the screen is black, the thermostat will not charge, or heating and cooling do not respond even though the thermostat display works.
Recharge a blank screen
- Pull the Nest display straight off its base with a firm, even motion.
- Find the micro-USB port on the back of the display.
- Plug it into a phone charger or computer USB port.
- Let it charge for at least 30 minutes.
- Look for a small charging icon.
- Snap the display back onto the wall base.
- Wait for it to reconnect to the HVAC system.
If the display will not power on after a proper charge, the base wiring or HVAC power may be the real problem.
If the screen works but heat or AC does not
- Confirm the thermostat is set to Heat or Cool, not Off.
- Set the target temperature several degrees past the current room temperature.
- Check the furnace or air handler power switch.
- Open the Google Home app and look for an error banner.
- For heat pumps, confirm the correct equipment type under Settings > Equipment.
- Check the breaker labeled furnace, AC, air handler, or HVAC.
If the equipment itself is locked out, Nest cannot force it to run. Many furnaces show diagnostic blink codes behind the access panel.
Check the base wiring safely
Only inspect wiring after turning off HVAC power at the furnace or air handler switch. If unsure, turn off the HVAC breaker too.
- Remove the display from the base.
- Photograph the wiring.
- Confirm each wire is fully seated in its terminal.
- Check for a C-wire in the common terminal.
- Look for loose, bare, or damaged wire ends.
- Snap the display back on.
- Restore power and wait 10 to 15 minutes.
Homes without a C-wire may rely on power stealing, which can cause intermittent blank screens on some systems. Nest Power Connector or a dedicated C-wire can solve that, but a technician should handle it if you are not comfortable at the furnace control board.
Also check for a blown small fuse on the furnace control board if you know how to do so safely. If the wiring layout is unfamiliar or an equipment diagnostic light shows a fault, call a licensed HVAC technician.
