Nest Doorbell Not Working: How to Fix It

A Nest Doorbell can stop working because of weak Wi-Fi at the door, low battery on battery models, stale app status, notification settings, or a hardware power issue.

These steps apply to Google Nest Doorbell battery and wired models, including first- and second-generation versions using the Google Home app.

Does this affect you?

Use this if the doorbell does not send notifications, the video feed is blank or frozen, or pressing the button does not appear to do anything.

Check Wi-Fi signal and app status

  1. Open the Google Home app.
  2. Tap the doorbell camera tile.
  3. Look for a signal warning or error banner.
  4. If signal is weak, move a mesh node or Wi-Fi extender closer to the front door.
  5. Confirm your router supports 2.4 GHz and that combined-band settings are not causing problems.
  6. Restart the router by unplugging it for 1 minute.
  7. Plug it back in and wait 2 to 3 minutes.

Front doors often have weak Wi-Fi because they are far from the router and surrounded by exterior walls, metal doors, or brick.

Check battery models

Skip this section for wired Nest Doorbells that draw continuous power.

  1. Open the doorbell page in Google Home.
  2. Check the battery percentage.
  3. If low, remove the doorbell from the mount.
  4. Charge it with the included USB-C cable for several hours.
  5. Expect live view and notifications to stop while it is off the mount.
  6. Reattach the doorbell and wait for Wi-Fi reconnect.

Cold weather and frequent motion events can drain battery doorbells faster than expected.

Restart, notifications, and re-adding

  1. In Google Home, tap the doorbell.
  2. Open the gear icon.
  3. Tap Restart Device if available.
  4. Wait 1 to 2 minutes for it to return.
  5. If app restart is impossible, remove and reattach a battery doorbell, or briefly cut power to a wired doorbell circuit if you can do so safely.
  6. Check phone notification permission for Google Home.
  7. Check doorbell notification settings inside Google Home.

If the feed works but alerts do not, the issue is usually phone or app notification settings rather than the doorbell hardware.

If problems persist, remove the doorbell from Google Home and add it again. Firmware updates install automatically when the doorbell has power and Wi-Fi; a restart can sometimes help a pending update complete. If it will not power on, charge, or recover from a frozen feed, contact Google Nest support.
