Nest Camera Night Vision Not Working: How to Fix It

Nest cameras use infrared LEDs for night vision, which is why dark footage normally appears black and white. Real problems usually come from settings, reflections, dirty lenses, distance, or weak power.

These steps apply to Google Nest Cam and Nest Doorbell models controlled through the Google Home app.

Does this affect you?

Use this if night footage is blurry, washed out, too dark, stuck in black and white, or not switching to night mode. A subscription does not change the camera’s night vision hardware.

Check night vision settings

  1. Open the Google Home app.
  2. Tap the Nest camera.
  3. Tap the gear icon.
  4. Open Video quality.
  5. Find Night vision.
  6. Set it to On or Auto.
  7. Wait about a minute and check Live View again in low light.

Auto is usually best because the camera switches to infrared as the light drops instead of running night vision all the time.

Fix glare and reflections

Infrared light bouncing back into the lens is one of the most common causes of a white haze or washed-out night image.

  • Do not point the camera through window glass or a storm door.
  • Move it away from reflective siding, nearby walls, or glossy surfaces close to the lens.
  • Check for spider webs near the camera.
  • Wipe dust from the lens with a soft dry cloth.
  • Re-aim the camera so the infrared LEDs have a clear path.

Dirt or web strands that are nearly invisible during the day can glow brightly under infrared at night.

Improve short range or dark footage

  • Check whether battery-saving or reduced-frame-rate mode is limiting video quality.
  • Aim the camera at an area within its realistic infrared range, often roughly 15 to 30 feet depending on model.
  • Add a motion floodlight or nearby outdoor light if you need color footage at night.
  • For wired models, confirm stable power.
  • Test the camera in a fully dark room to see whether the infrared LEDs activate at all.

Nest Cam battery, wired indoor/outdoor models, and doorbells can have different night range. If the LEDs never glow or night vision suddenly stopped on a clean, unobstructed camera, contact Google Nest support for a hardware or warranty check.
