Kasa Smart Plug Not Connecting: How to Fix It

Kasa smart plugs are picky about Wi-Fi during setup. Most connection failures come from trying to use a 5 GHz or band-steered network when the plug needs 2.4 GHz.

These steps apply to TP-Link Kasa KP-series smart plugs using the Kasa Smart app on iPhone or Android.

Does this affect you?

Use this if a new Kasa plug will not pair, the app times out, the LED blinks in an unfamiliar pattern, or an existing plug went offline and stopped responding.

Connect to 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi specifically

Kasa plugs cannot join 5 GHz networks.

  1. Open your router app or admin page.
  2. Check whether 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz have separate names.
  3. If they share one name, temporarily split them or turn off Smart Connect or band steering.
  4. On your phone, join the 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi network.
  5. Open the Kasa Smart app.
  6. Tap + Add Device.
  7. Choose Plugs and select your plug model.
  8. Follow the prompt to join the plug’s temporary Wi-Fi signal.
  9. When the app asks for your home network, choose the 2.4 GHz name.

If setup works near the router, move the plug to its final outlet afterward. The initial pairing handshake can be more sensitive than normal daily use.

Power-cycle and retry setup

  1. Unplug the Kasa plug from the wall outlet.
  2. Wait 10 seconds.
  3. Plug it back in.
  4. Watch the LED pattern.
  5. Wait 1 to 2 minutes for the app to reconnect.
  6. If it stays offline, remove the device entry from the Kasa app.
  7. Run setup again from the beginning.

A fast blinking amber or orange light usually means the plug is ready to pair or has lost network settings.

Factory reset the plug

Use this when a plug was on an old router, belonged to someone else, or will not pair after a power cycle.

  1. Keep the plug powered on.
  2. Press and hold the side or front button for about 10 seconds.
  3. Wait for the LED to blink amber and green rapidly.
  4. Release the button.
  5. Remove the old app entry if it remains.
  6. Add the plug again in the Kasa app.

Holding the button for only about 5 seconds may perform a soft reset that keeps Wi-Fi settings, which is not enough for many connection problems.

Router and app checks

If a confirmed 2.4 GHz setup still fails, check for router device limits, MAC address filtering, guest network restrictions, and a stale Kasa app version. Update the app from the App Store or Google Play before deeper troubleshooting.

If factory reset, strong signal, app update, and 2.4 GHz setup all fail and the LED stays stuck, the plug may be defective. Check the purchase date and contact TP-Link through Kasa support or Feedback.
