Ring Alarm is a DIY security system built around a Base Station. The Base Station comes first, then sensors, keypad, modes, and monitoring choices.
These steps apply to Ring Alarm 2nd Gen and Ring Alarm Pro kits set up through the Ring app on iOS and Android.

Use this if you just unboxed a Ring Alarm kit and want the Base Station, keypad, and sensors working together before relying on it for security.
Set up the Base Station
Everything else depends on the Base Station, so start there.
- Plug the Base Station into power near the router.
- For initial setup, connect it to the router with Ethernet if possible.
- Open the Ring app.
- Tap the menu icon.
- Choose Set Up a Device > Security System > Ring Alarm.
- Name your location.
- Confirm the address used for monitoring dispatch.
- Wait for the app to detect the Base Station.
- Confirm the chime and solid blue light when setup finishes.
You can switch the Base Station to Wi-Fi later in its settings. Use 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi if prompted.
Add sensors and the keypad
Add one accessory at a time so any issue is easy to isolate.
- In the Ring app, choose Set Up a Device.
- Select Contact Sensor, Motion Detector, Keypad, Range Extender, or the accessory type you are adding.
- Pull the battery tab or insert the battery.
- Keep the accessory near the Base Station during pairing.
- Name the device by location before mounting it.
- Mount contact sensors on the door or window frame with the two halves aligned.
- Keep contact sensor halves within about half an inch when closed.
- Set a keypad PIN during keypad setup.
- Repeat for each accessory.
Mount motion sensors in a corner about 6 to 8 feet high. Avoid pointing them at windows, heat vents, or direct sun to reduce false alarms.
Set modes and monitoring
Review Home, Away, and Disarmed modes before daily use. Home often arms perimeter sensors while leaving interior motion off. Away usually arms everything.
- Open Modes in the Ring app.
- Review which sensors are active in each mode.
- Set entry delays for doors you use to come home.
- Choose whether the siren sounds immediately or after a delay.
- Open Protect Plans if you want professional monitoring.
- Test Away mode by arming it and opening a monitored door.
Without professional monitoring, Ring Alarm can still sound a siren and send phone alerts, but no monitoring center dispatches help automatically. Large homes, detached garages, or metal-heavy construction may need a Range Extender. Add extra sensors, smoke/CO listeners, and cameras one device at a time through the same setup path.
