Auto-lock can secure the deadbolt automatically after a door is unlocked or closed. It is useful, but the timing and door-sensor behavior matter.
These steps apply to app-controlled auto-lock settings on smart locks from August, Schlage, Yale, Kwikset, and similar brands after the lock is already installed.

Use this if you want the lock to secure itself instead of relying on memory. Locks with door sensors can wait until the door is actually closed, while timer-only locks may lock even if the door is open.
Turn on auto-lock
- Open the lock’s app.
- Select the lock.
- Tap Settings or the gear icon.
- Find Auto-Lock.
- Turn it on.
- Confirm any warning about automatic locking.
- Accept the default delay for now if the app requires it.
Most locks leave auto-lock off by default so you can choose the behavior after installation.
Adjust the auto-lock delay
- Stay in the Auto-Lock settings screen.
- Open Delay, Timer, or Lock After.
- Choose a delay, often from immediate locking to several minutes.
- Save the setting.
- Unlock the door and time one full cycle to confirm the delay.
A short delay improves security but can lock you out while carrying groceries, checking mail, or moving items. A longer delay gives more breathing room but leaves the door unlocked longer.
Turn it off or use location features
To disable auto-lock, return to Settings > Auto-Lock and turn it off. The lock will then lock only from the app, keypad, voice assistant, automation, or manual thumb turn.
Some lock apps offer Auto-Unlock or geofencing based on your phone location. That is separate from a simple timer and may be better for some households, but it requires background location permission.
If the lock has no built-in door-closed sensor, consider a separate door/window contact sensor and automation so the lock runs only after the door is confirmed shut. Auto-lock also uses the motor more often, so check battery status monthly if you rely on it. Vacation or away modes may shorten the delay while you are traveling.
