How to Set Up a TP-Link Tapo Camera

Smart home troubleshooting category image

TP-Link Tapo cameras set up through the Tapo app without a separate hub for standard models. The app handles account sign-in, Wi-Fi pairing, live view, and recording settings.

These steps apply to TP-Link Tapo indoor and outdoor camera models on iPhone and Android.

Does this affect you?

Use this if you have a new Tapo camera and need to connect it to Wi-Fi, view it on your phone, and decide how recordings should be stored.

Set up the camera in the Tapo app

  1. Download the Tapo app.
  2. Create a TP-Link ID or sign in.
  3. Plug in the camera.
  4. Wait for the voice prompt or flashing setup light.
  5. Tap + in the Tapo app.
  6. Choose Add Device.
  7. Select your camera model or let the app auto-detect it.
  8. Follow the prompts to scan the QR code displayed in the app with the camera lens.
  9. Wait for the camera to join Wi-Fi.
  10. Confirm the app shows a live preview.
  11. Name the camera by room or location.

Set up near the router the first time. A strong signal prevents many pairing failures before you move the camera to its final location.

Set up storage and recording

  1. Insert a microSD card if you plan to record locally.
  2. Open the camera in the Tapo app.
  3. Tap Settings.
  4. Open Storage Settings.
  5. Format the microSD card the first time it is used.
  6. Choose continuous recording, motion-only recording, or scheduled recording.
  7. Open Playback to confirm recordings are available by date and time.
  8. Choose Tapo Care if you want cloud backup.

Cloud storage can protect footage if the camera or microSD card is stolen or damaged, but it requires a plan. Local recording keeps video on the card inside the camera.

Tune detection, sharing, and assistants

Open Settings > Detection to draw zones and reduce alerts from sidewalks, streets, trees, or other areas you do not care about. Use Notifications to adjust sensitivity and quiet hours.

Use Device Sharing with another person’s TP-Link ID if they need access. Do not share your own login. For Echo Show or Nest Hub viewing, use Tapo third-party compatibility settings to link Amazon or Google accounts.
