A leak sensor only helps if it is paired correctly, alerts your phone, and sits where water will reach it early. Most sensors alert; they do not stop water by themselves.
These steps apply to Wi-Fi and hub-connected water leak sensors from Wyze, Govee, Aqara, Ring Alarm, SmartThings, and similar brands.

Use this if you want an early warning for a burst pipe, leaking water heater, washing-machine hose, sink trap, refrigerator line, or sump pump problem.
Pair the sensor to its app or hub
- Insert the battery if it is not already installed.
- Confirm the sensor LED blinks or otherwise shows power.
- Open the sensor app or the hub app, such as SmartThings, Aqara, Ring, or Wyze.
- Tap + > Add Device.
- Choose Water Leak Sensor or Sensors.
- Put the sensor into pairing mode by holding its small button if the app asks.
- For Wi-Fi sensors, enter the home Wi-Fi details.
- For hub sensors, keep the sensor near the hub during pairing.
- Name the sensor by location, such as Water Heater or Under Kitchen Sink.
Location names matter because the alert should tell you exactly where to go when water is detected.
Place the sensor where leaks start
- Under or beside the water heater.
- Under kitchen and bathroom sinks.
- Beside washing-machine supply hoses.
- Behind the refrigerator ice-maker line.
- Near a sump pump.
- At the lowest point where water would pool first.
Lay the sensor flat with contacts facing down unless the manufacturer says otherwise. Do not place it on a shelf where water may never touch it.
Test alerts and maintain it
- Enable push notifications in the app.
- Set secondary alerts such as email, SMS, or a smart-light automation if supported.
- Dab a few drops of water onto the contacts with a damp cloth.
- Confirm the local alarm sounds if the sensor has one.
- Confirm your phone receives the alert.
- Dry the sensor fully afterward.
- Repeat a quick water-drop test every six months.
If you also have a smart main-water shutoff valve, connect compatible leak sensors through a hub automation so the valve can close when water is detected. That usually requires separate plumbing installation for the valve.
Treat low-battery alerts as same-week tasks. A dead leak sensor is silent at the exact moment you need it. Use multiple sensors around appliances and fixtures because one sensor in the center of a room cannot detect water it never touches.
