How to Set Up a Lutron Caseta Smart Switch

Smart home troubleshooting category image

Lutron Caseta in-wall switches replace a real wall switch, so setup combines a network bridge with household electrical wiring. Treat the wiring step carefully.

These steps apply to Lutron Caseta in-wall switches and dimmers paired with a Lutron Smart Bridge through the Lutron app.

Does this affect you?

Use this if you bought a Caseta switch or dimmer and need to pair it with the Smart Bridge and install it in the wall. This is not the same as plugging in a smart plug.

Set up the Smart Bridge

Do this before opening any wall switch box.

  1. Plug the Lutron Smart Bridge into power.
  2. Connect the bridge to your router with the included Ethernet cable.
  3. Download the Lutron app.
  4. Create an account or sign in.
  5. Tap Add Bridge.
  6. Follow the app prompts.
  7. Wait for the bridge LED to turn solid green.

The bridge stays wired to the router by Ethernet. Caseta switches then communicate with the bridge over Lutron’s wireless protocol rather than joining Wi-Fi individually.

Wire the switch safely

This step involves standard household voltage. If you are not comfortable with electrical wiring, hire a licensed electrician.

  1. Turn off the circuit breaker for the switch you are replacing.
  2. Use a non-contact voltage tester to confirm the wires are not live.
  3. Remove the old cover plate.
  4. Unscrew the old switch from the wall box.
  5. Take a photo of the existing wire connections.
  6. Check your Caseta model’s wiring diagram.
  7. Confirm whether that model requires a neutral wire.
  8. Connect the wires exactly as the Lutron instructions show.
  9. Mount the new switch in the box.
  10. Attach the cover plate.
  11. Turn the breaker back on.

Many Caseta in-wall switches require a neutral wire, while some Caseta dimmers can work without one. Older homes may not have a neutral in the switch box, so check before buying or wiring.

Pair the switch and add controls

  1. Open the Lutron app.
  2. Tap Add Device.
  3. Select the switch or dimmer type.
  4. Press the button on the switch when the app asks.
  5. Wait for pairing confirmation.
  6. Assign the switch to a room.
  7. Test on, off, and dimming if supported.

If the switch does not respond reliably, check distance and construction between the switch and Smart Bridge. Concrete, metal, and long distances can weaken the signal.

Pico remotes pair to the same bridge and can control lights from another spot in the room. Add scenes in the Lutron app to set multiple Caseta devices together, and use the app’s integrations area to link Alexa, Google, or other assistants.
